It’s crucial that your complete and accurate medical and dental history is disclosed on your first visit. And don't worry, there is no need to be embarrassed if you haven't flossed as often as you should or if you have some habits that affect the state of your teeth. Dr. Hidalgo's only concern is helping you achieve a healthy, beautiful smile and the more he knows about you, the better he is equipped to provide an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
It's perfectly normal to feel anxious before going to your first appointment. Your Health History
Before the dental exam is performed, talk to Dr. Hidalgo about your health history. This will give him insight about your oral health and underlying causes of present issues, if any. Please have a list of all medications ready for a photocopy.
An x-ray image is the most effective tool we use to diagnose problems that are not easily visible. These include tooth decay, abscesses, impacted teeth and jawbone damage. The details x-rays provide could make all the difference for your overall oral health. Our dentist may also recommend a panoramic radiograph. Panoramic radiographs provide a complete visual of your jaws, which helps in pinpointing any damage to your jaw bone.
We recommend a comprehensive exam for all our first-time patients. You can look at this as a “get to know you visit”. In our quest to provide you with a personalized plan for lifetime care based on your goals, timeline, and budget, we will evaluate your current dental health in detail.
A full exam includes:
- An oral cancer screening with our Velscope
- An exam for gum disease or its warning signs
- A tooth exam for decay, cavities or damaged fillings
- A jaw joint and bite exam
- A thorough cleaning followed by a polishing that leaves your teeth feeling as good as they look
Also, a complete set of x-rays about once a year provides us with the most accurate picture of the health of your facial bone structure as well as any decay that may be developing in the hard-to-reach areas between your teeth.
Our hygienists will also take photographs of your mouth for a long-term record. With these photos, you can see your mouth the way we see it. These photos allow us to see healthy areas as well as areas that may need attention so that we can prevent more complicated problems before they occur. Communication is vitally important in a doctor/patient relationship and these photos will help us provide a comprehensive treatment plan that meets your specific needs and is as unique as you are.
Dr. Hidalgo may recommend you get a professional teeth cleaning. Dental cleanings are meant to remove stains that normal brushing just can't handle. Also, during this cleaning session, our hygienist will remove accumulated plaque from outside and in-between the teeth. After a thorough cleaning, your teeth will be polished leaving your mouth fresh and your teeth feeling silky smooth.
After your treatment is over, our dentist may recommend products that help prevent future dental issues and ensure that your oral health is always at its best. Recommended products include
- fluoride toothpastes and mouthwashes that help prevent cavities
- a dental care kit
Should you have any questions or doubts, please don't hesitate to ask Dr. Hidalgo or any member of our team. As in all relationships, communication is the key. We are here to serve you in your needs and desires for the overall health of your mouth and teeth. We are your advocates for optimal oral health!
Once the comprehensive exam and x-rays are complete, Dr. Hidalgo will provide you with solutions to your dental problems. Through a comprehensive treatment plan, we can resolve the problems that are adversely affecting your smile. Since each treatment plan is developed based on your specific goals, timeline, and budget it is imperative that we are clear about your expectations from the start.
